ASOIU Renewable Energy Laboratory

The importance of cutting-edge laboratories in higher education cannot be overstated. They provide a dynamic environment where theoretical knowledge turns into practical expertise. With great enthusiasm, we propose establishing a Renewable Energy Laboratory at Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University.

This lab aims to nurture the next generation of renewable energy leaders by offering various equipment and advanced technology. It represents a significant leap forward in renewable energy and smart grid research, featuring state-of-the-art computer-controlled equipment for simulating real-world scenarios.

Additionally, manually operated systems provide fundamental understanding and serve as backup solutions. The lab also focuses on smart grids, utilizing advanced computer-controlled equipment to simulate complex scenarios for more efficient energy distribution. This initiative aligns with our commitment to education quality and a sustainable future, including a dual-degree program with Warwick University, empowering students to drive change and innovation in renewable energy.

1. Photovoltaic Solar Energy Modular Unit

A Photovoltaic Solar Energy Modular Unit is a laboratory-scale unit designed to study all the parameters involved in solar radiation's direct conversion into electricity. The unit is based on some application modules and photovoltaic solar panels assembled in mobile structures. It is specially designed for the theoretical and practical study of electrical installations with photovoltaic solar energy, the typical configurations used in photovoltaic installations, and the operation of the different elements involved in the conversion.

2. Computer Controlled Wind Energy Unit

The Computer Controlled Wind Energy Unit, contains an aerogenerator, on a laboratory scale, and is used to study the conversion of kinetic wind energy into electrical energy and to study the influence of some factors on this generation.

3. Wind Power Application with Permanent Magnets Synchronous Generator

This application allows experimental investigation on the conversion of wind energy into electricity using a wind power generator. The system configuration is stand-alone (isolated from the grid). The equipment is manufactured using real components available on the market.
The Wind Power Application with Permanent Magnets Synchronous Generator, “AEL-WPT”, is an application designed by EDIBON to train students in the main operations of wind turbines.

4. Modular Smart Grid Power Systems

The Smart Grid Power Systems, Renewable Energies and Diesel Engine with Protection Relays, 5kW, “AEL-MPSS-01C”, has been designed by EDIBON for the training at both the theoretical and practical levels in the field of Power Generation, Transmission, Distribution, Consumption, Protections Relays, Wind Energy and Photovoltaic Energy with Diesel Engine with synchronous generator.
The “AEL-MPSS-01C” provides several levels of training to give the users full knowledge and experiences about the most important principles of control, operation, and functioning of Smart Grid Power Systems.

5. Computer-controlled PEM Fuel Cell Unit with Scada

The Computer Controlled PEM Fuel Cell Unit has been designed to allow the students to understand the fuel cell technology, especially that of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEM). It also enables the calculation of several fundamental parameters of a PEM-type fuel cell, such as power density, polarization curves, efficiency, etc., and the variation of some of these parameters in function of the consumption of reagents and the developed power.

6. Electrolyzer

The Electrolyzer (60 Nl/h), “EDILAB-ELEC2”, designed by EDIBON, can separate hydrogen and oxygen from water by applying electricity. The “EDILAB-ELEC2”, consists of electrolyzes to generate hydrogen which uses a high-performance and efficiency system based on water electrolysis. Hydrogen to be used safely is obtained from it.

7. Additional equipment

7.1. Digital Oscilloscope

DSOX3014G is an InfiniiVision 3000G X-Series digital signal oscilloscope (DSO). With the best in usability, a comprehensive front panel with quick access buttons, easy-to-use touch operation, or mouse-based control through direct connection or web-based UI, the InfiniiVision 3000G X-series oscilloscope enables working in whatever way is best for users.

7.2. N9324C Basic Spectrum Analyzer (BSA)

Higher productivity is achieved with the Keysight N9324C basic spectrum analyzer (BSA). It has proven test efficiency, best-in-class usability, and flexibility to adapt to new requirements.

7.3. Complete Weather Station

Precise weather monitoring systems for assessment and system operations are a requirement for Renewable projects and other Industrial applications. In Solar Plants, Weather Monitoring stations are key in the initial assessment to finding optimal locations for solar radiation and improving plant efficiency.
